Training for a 5k in 11 weeks: Week 2

Monday

Today was a lot harder than Friday. First of all, right at the beginning of my workout Pandora decided to stop working. It’s been doing that a lot lately, and it’s so unpleasant to exercise without music. I’ve been meaning to put some backup music on my phone, I’ve just been too lazy and I keep forgetting. Thankfully it started back up after a few minutes.

Also my legs were just really tired and sore, so the workout was a bit more difficult. I almost thought I wouldn’t be able to finish, but I knew it was just all in my head so I pushed through. My breathing was fine for the most part though. I have exercise-induced asthma, so cardio can be pretty difficult for me. But if I use my inhaler before working out, I’m usually fine. Stretching afterward felt really good and I felt like I could run some more afterward.

Tuesday

I really didn’t want to work out today, but damnit I did it. It was a fairly productive workout, though I had to skip planks and push ups because I felt like I hurt my shoulder on the lat pulldown and I’d rather delay progress than risk an injury. I really pushed myself today though, I kept finding myself wanting to half ass it but telling myself “there’s no point in doing this if you’re not going to do it right. The pain is only in your mind” and I pushed through. Pandora crashed again, but this time I had Spotify as a backup. I decided to try heal walks to strengthen my shins, but I felt like an absolute fool doing that so I think I’ll reserve heal walks for home and do something else at the gym.

Wednesday

Today was a pretty easy workout for the most part. My endurance was way up, I didn’t break as big of a sweat as I usually do, and my breathing was good. The running portions weren’t too hard and the walking portions almost felt too long. That is until around the 18 minute mark when my calves started hurting like hell and I almost wasn’t sure I could finish. But I only had 7 minutes to go so I pushed through the pain and finished the workout feeling pretty good. I think I’m going to take the whole weekend to rest, I feel like my legs really need it. I also feel like I can never stretch enough lately.

Thursday

I was bad today and skipped my workout again. This is what happens when I go home after work instead of straight to the gym…

Friday

I had a terrible day and did not want to go to the gym, but running did make me feel better. I ran faster than I ever have before: 5.6mph. I only did that for about a minute (the rest of the running portions ranged from 4.0-4.5mph) but it felt great for the short time I was able to. My knees hurt at the beginning of the workout but that subsided. My hips hurt near the end and I had a wicked headache after, but both pains subsided shortly after I got off the treadmill. I’m excited to see if I’ve gotten in shape enough to be able to do week 2 of c25k next week. I’m also going to need to start training outside some because it is a lot different than running on the treadmill. 2 weeks down, 9 to go until race time!

Tip of the week: To prevent  choking when drinking water during exercise, swallow during your exhale. Seriously.
