Today I decided to finally retry C25k. This is probably my fifth or so attempt at the program; I’ve never been able to make it past week 3. In the past, I’d been able to get through week 1, struggle through week 2, and fail on week 3 and then quit. Today though, it’s feeling like it’s going to be harder than ever.
I’m in the worse shape I’ve ever been in. Or at least, it feels that way. I’ve lost a total of 34lbs from my highest weight, but I haven’t exercised consistently since 2015 when I quit going to the gym. I have a sedentary desk job and most of my hobbies include sitting as well. So suffice it to say, I’m exceptionally out of shape.
C25k week 1 consists of 8 running segments of 1 minute each broken up by 8 walking segments of 90 seconds each. Now, my “running” is only like 4mph at best, so I’m really slow. So it’s not like I was sprinting or anything, but that didn’t stop my body from rebelling with everything it’s got.
The first two or three running stints went okay. I was out of breath, but I was able to recover. But by the fourth stint, my asthma kicked into high gear. Every time the app said “start walking” I uttered a “thank god.” Every time the app said “begin running,” I groaned and coaxed my ever tiring body into running for another minute. Eventually, my chest was on fire, and I had to walk through the 7th stint and about 20 seconds of the 8th stint. I’m pretty sure I died at one point, but some kind (or evil) soul resurrected me so that I could finish.
When I got home, I sat in front of the fan and stretched, trying to get my heart rate and breathing back to normal. I was drenched in sweat, despite what shouldn’t have really been that tough of a workout. I might even have to repeat week 1 this time, but I’m going to do it. I can feel every day how out of shape I am, every time I take the stairs at work or walk for more than a few blocks and my muscles and joints start to ache. I’m too young to feel this bad!
At least this little guy enjoyed the exercise:
